Meet the Swing Doctors

Swing Doctor Golf is the fusion of contemporary sport science and innovative golf instruction. These two approaches came together with the meeting of Dr. Michael Breen and Garett Jenkinson. It is a story where the whole is most certainly greater than the sum of the parts.

Dr. Michael Breen has spent his life engaged in competitive sport, sport science, and for the past 22 years as a Doctor of Chiropractic focusing on functional health care for active people. At the University of Calgary, Dr. Breen had a great interest in body function as it relates to sport and activity. His fields of study were focused on sport biomechanics, kinesiology, and motor learning. Following graduation with an Honours Degree in Physical Education/Kinesiology, Dr. Breen attended Palmer College of Chiropractic – West in San Jose, California. Chiropractic College, with its obvious emphasis on musculoskeletal health and function, was the addition of the clinical component to the educational base. Dr. Breen then used his lifetime of exposure to sport, sport science, and clinical expertise to create a successful practice emphasizing health through sport, movement and nutrition.

Dr. Breen was also a 7 handicap golfer who was intrigued by the mechanics of golf and by the nature of golf instruction. He would read all kinds of material on golf and was frequently discouraged by the way that golf was communicated. In particular, he frequently read that balance was the key to the golf swing and yet none of the authors would describe how to improve a golfers balance. From years of working in this field, Dr. Breen knew that balance improvement was reasonably easy to achieve and developed a group of golf specific balance exercises using unstable balance platforms. He then showed these ideas to a few local golf pros who thought that the exercises were interesting but who didn’t see the bigger picture. Then Dr. Breen showed the exercises to Garett Jenkinson who saw the potential of the application, and Swing Doctor Golf was born.

Garett Jenkinson has been a golf professional for 15 years. He was a successful teacher before taking his playing skills to international platforms like the Canadian Tour, Gateway Tour and Nationwide events. In his golf apprenticeship, Garett also read everything about golf that he could get his hands on and became very well versed in numerous models of how to teach the game. He was discouraged by what he saw as a lot of confusing information and came to understand how frustrating it can be for all levels of golfers to improve. Garett began to bring together the best of all that he had read, studied, and taught and created his own teaching methodologies. Of great importance in his growth as a golf instructor was his recognition that students could not learn how to swing a golf club properly if they did not have the capacity to move their bodies correctly. He would encourage his students to take classes in flexibility, yoga, and strength training. He found that his students would become more physically capable, but that their golf was not improving. Garett had an intuitive understanding that golf specific exercises were critical to allow him to help his students play better.

The meeting between Breen and Jenkinson was meant to be. Dr. Breen knew that the exercises had to improve golf specific balance, and Garett knew that he had found the mechanism to improve his students physical capacity. Swing Doctor Golf has been creating golf specific exercises and helping golfers improve their game for 10 years. The SDG Fit Ball Exercise Booklet is the first product in a series of applications that is guaranteed to make you a better golfer.
